Microchip Manufacturer Search Service Website

Picture

Chloe Standard launched their pet microchip manufacturer search service website ChecktheChip.com in September 2009 as the first of in a series of new products and services. The website was the first of its kind to address the pet microchip database problem in the United States.

ChecktheChip.com website automates the process of matching RFID code with the microchip's manufacturer, based on identifying indicators in the RFID microchip number.

"We are pleased to see such a vivid number of daily website users at the Check the Chip website and happy to meet the needs of the veterinarians, shelters and pet owners who are using the website. It is crucial that we take the time to build services that make sense to those who rely on them," said Olivia Sadlowski, Chloe Standard's Founder. "Since this is the first service we've released, we're thrilled with the positive feedback and we're happy to address other crucial issues within the pet safety space."

Database Issues

There are seven (7) microchip manufacturers in the U.S. and each operate their own microchip database.
  1. As a microchip is read with an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) microchip scanner, it will retrieve the pet's unique microchip number (9-16 digit numeric and alphanumeric digits). However, it will not identify the microchip database.
  2. With seven different databases and only the pet's RFID code on-hand, finding the correct database was a trial-and-error process of calling each database's call center until the correct database was found.

BETA Release

The ChecktheChip.com website was released as a BETA version, pending the allocation of license agreements with all existing microchip databases to allow Chloe Standard access to the microchip numbers they manage. It was believed that the functionality of microchip search function would greatly increase due to the availability of a search to retrieve the last known microchip registration even if that registration was with a database other than the original manufacturer's database.

The pursuit of these license agreements has since been suspended in favor of providing the public with a search service that would return just the microchip's manufacturer. For instance, a search site that has access to just a few databases would dramatically and cautiously work to further complicate the microchip search service. "It was clear that not all microchip databases would have participated, especially those that dominate the majority of pet microchip registrations. Therefore, the search service would have been incomplete, perhaps, for years until the license agreements were put into place. By returning just the manufacturer, we can guarantee that 100% of microchip database searches would result in 100% correct information," says Sadlowski. "It is important that we work to un-complicate the issue, not provide more information that might further confuse shelters and the public."

CheckTheChip.com -- V.2

To address website user requests, Chloe Standard is currently developing additional services for the ChecktheChip.com site. The V.2 site will be easier to use and make available extra tools and resources for shelters and animal rescue groups to help them achieve their goals of having their new adopted pet's microchip registration keep up-to-date on a regular basis.
